Asphalt paving in Box Elder follows the growth of Ellsworth Air Force Base. The base lies on the northwest side of the city and surrounds it on three sides, and in March 2019 the Air Force picked Ellsworth as the preferred home for the first operational B-21 bomber unit and the first B-21 training unit.
