Paving at the Beautiful Fork

Asphalt paving in Belle Fourche deals with a climate of extremes. The city has recorded 112 degrees (July 27, 1931) and 44 below (December 22, 1989), and its 1991 to 2020 normals show 17.99 inches of precipitation and 42.2 inches of snow a year. Belle Fourche sits on the boundary between humid continental and cool semi-arid climates. Asphalt that goes from scorching to bitterly cold has to have a sound base and sealed cracks to last.

History

The name is French for beautiful fork, describing the meeting of the Belle Fourche and Redwater rivers and Hay Creek. The city was founded in 1884, and Seth Bullock is credited with effectively establishing it, and became the Butte County seat after the 1894 election. In 1895 it shipped 2,500 carloads of cattle a month in peak season, described as the world's largest livestock-shipping point at the time. Wool, cattle and bentonite have all driven its growth.

River ground

With three waterways meeting at the city, some neighborhoods sit on low ground near the rivers. Base depth and drainage matter more there. We probe for soft spots and plan where water leaves the pavement.

Ag and industrial lots

Belle Fourche's farm, ranch and industrial businesses use lots and yards that carry trucks and trailers. Thicker sections and full-depth repairs where wheel paths have rutted hold up far better than thin patches. HomeAdvisor lists commercial asphalt lots at $2 to $4.50 per square foot.

Geographic center

In 1959 the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey designated a point 20 miles north of Belle Fourche as the geographic center of the United States, and the city's tourism draws on it. Lots serving visitors need clear striping and good surfaces in summer.

Approaches

Outside city limits, approaches onto Butte County roads fall under the county, and onto state highways under SDDOT. We check which applies before work at the road edge.

Costs

HomeGuide lists new driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot and sealing at $1 to $2. Large yards are often cheaper with compacted recycled asphalt. Haul distance from the plant is included in our written price.

Typical jobs here

We see residential driveway replacements, truck and trailer yards for ag businesses, small commercial lots in need of patching and striping, and paved approaches to shops on the edge of town.

Belle Fourche Questions

Why do extreme temperatures matter for asphalt?

Asphalt softens in heat and becomes brittle in cold. A sound base and sealed cracks help it ride out both.

Do you pave ranch and ag lots?

Yes, with sections sized for trucks and trailers, or compacted recycled asphalt for big yards.

My driveway is near the river. What changes?

More attention to base depth and drainage, since lower ground stays wetter.

Who handles approach permits outside town?

Butte County for county roads and SDDOT for state highways.

How often should I seal cracks?

Every year or two as new cracks open, ideally in late summer or early fall.
